Initializing a Forest Growth Model Using Light Detection and Ranging
Abstract
Cody Lai was a semi-finalist in the 2026 UBC Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition. Niko presented the research titled “Initializing a Forest Growth Model Using Light Detection and Ranging.” Traditional forest management in British Columbia relies on a two-phase inventory methodology. This approach uses subjective aerial photogrammetry to delineate forest polygons, assigning generalized attributes like average age and height to large stands. However, these area-based averages lack the resolution, as they cannot account for individual tree-level processes like recruitment and mortality. This research addresses these limitations by integrating Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) data into Growth and Yield (G&Y) modeling. Cody Lai is completing a PhD in Forestry in the Department of Forestry under the supervision of Dr. Nicholas Coops. #3MT is an academic competition that assists current graduate students with fostering effective presentation and communication skills. Participants have just three minutes to explain the breadth and significance of their research project to a non-specialist audience.
