Lights, camera, coopetition: film and television production in a peripheral region
Abstract
While ‘coopetition’ – the simultaneous competition and cooperation of firms in regional clusters – supports regional value creation, its dynamics in peripheral regions remain underexplored. This research addresses this gap by examining the antecedents of coopetition in the film and television production sector in the peripheral UK region of Northern Ireland (NI). The findings show that constraints linked to peripherality, firm size and age influence coopetition, while individual-level factors, particularly the owner-manager’s mindset, play a mediating role. Firms engage in coopetition as a relational response to spatial disadvantage. The study advances understanding of how coopetition functions in distinct regional and industrial contexts.
