The Sabu Anomaly: Reverse-Engineering an Ancient Composite Rotor and its Hydrodynamic Application in the First Dynasty
Abstract
The tri-lobed metasiltstone artifact known as the "Sabu Disk," excavated in 1936 from Tomb 3111 in Saqqara (c. 3100-3000 BCE), remains one of the most mechanically perplexing artifacts of early dynastic Egypt. Traditionally classified as a ceremonial vessel or incense burner, its highly complex Z_3-symmetric geometric topology defies standard mortuary typology. This paper proposes a re-evaluation of the artifact, suggesting that it may represent a preserved blueprint for a hydrodynamic testing apparatus. By re-examining the original excavation data through the lens of applied material science and fluid dynamics, we offer hypothetical resolutions to five major historical and mechanical discrepancies: (1) The geometric ambiguity of its reconstructed 61 cm diameter, proposing a mathematically continuous 10pi cm generating radius obscured by compressive aesthetic practices during 20th-century museum restoration. (2) The material paradox of utilizing brittle metasiltstone, addressed via the hypothesis of a thermal resin-infiltrated ancient composite material—conceptually analogous to modern open-cell metal foams. (3) A critical re-evaluation of modern fluid-dynamic simulations (circa 2017/2018), demonstrating how classical Newtonian paradigms led researchers to misinterpret observed topological force-cancellations not as aerodynamic inefficiency, but as the successful empirical generation of stress-free Dirichlet boundary nodes. (4) The archaeological anomaly of depositing two fully articulated oxen skeletons within the epicenter of the burial chamber, interpreted here as potential circumstantial evidence of a biological drive unit (torque source) required for macroscopic testing. (5) The conceptual reconstruction of a submerged hydrodynamic riverbed test stand. Ultimately, we propose that the artifact could have functioned as an engineering prototype, curated as a mortuary object due to the civilization's inability to mechanically scale the principles with contemporary metallurgy.
