Structures and Processes (S&P): A Stipulative Framework for Observable Structures
Abstract
We present a stipulative framework for observable structures: Structures and Processes (S&P). A structure is any pattern demarcated by some observer; a process is any mechanism or activity, requiring no observer to occur. The framework's core claim is that what we call an observable structure is not an independent entity that processes maintain from outside — it is organized process activity, demarcated as such for exactly as long as that organization holds and an observer's relation to it remains stable.This pattern has held without needing revision in every case examined: every structure investigated, on inspection, turns out to be organized process activity — and when that organization stops, nothing remains demarcable under the old name. This is not offered as a discovery that could have turned out otherwise. The definitions are stipulated, not derived from observation, in the same sense any foundational definition is (Section 5). What can be shown, and is shown here case by case, is narrower: that the definitions require no patching to apply — not in physics, not in biology, not in sociology, not anywhere examined so far.We demonstrate a two-layer architecture: Layer 1 (what an observable structure is) is scoped to observable structures and stated as stipulation; Layer 2 (a taxonomy of the relation between observer and process — mappable/non-mappable, visible/invisible) is a different kind of thing entirely: not itself a claim about what exists, but a vocabulary for what an observer perceives and can describe, updating as knowledge and tools advance, without touching Layer 1. Historical cases (bacteria, radioactivity, electromagnetic induction) illustrate an observer's relation to a process moving from Type D to Type C as tools and knowledge advanced, while the activity itself held throughout, unchanged by anyone's ability to name it.Two scope commitments are stated explicitly. First, S&P describes what's observable as organized process activity; it does not explain why this pattern holds or what, if anything, underlies it —these remain genuinely open, not deferred out of caution but because this method was never built to settle them. Second, this work does not use “emergence” as a technical term, for a reason sharper than style: any language treating dependence as a relation between two items — an emergent level and a base level, or any cause and what it causes — presupposes exactly the two-item structure this work's method shows has nowhere to land when applied to a single continuous activity. It is a reason that debate's own terms do not carry over here.Within this explicitly bounded scope, the pattern has held consistently across every case examined, including the ones hardest to describe any other way. This connects to older debates about substance and essence, but nothing here is offered as their refutation; a stipulated definition is not the kind of thing an observation refutes, and S&P claims no advantage over a rival stipulation beyond holding together on its own terms. What this work offers instead is narrower: a foundation, openly adopted rather than derived — because every chain of justification ends in adoption somewhere, and this one says so rather than dressing the stopping point up as necessity. What follows from that foundation is checked, case by case, for whether it holds without needing revision — not proof that it is correct, only that it does not break.
