On the Question of the Effect of Oxygen on Carbon Dioxide Excretion in the Lungs. (English Translation of the 1892 Classic)

Open access0 citations

Abstract

This publication presents a complete academic translation into English of the seminal work by the prominent physiologist B. F. Verigo, originally published in 1892 in Pflügers Archiv. The findings of this research laid the foundation for the discovery of a fundamental physiological phenomenon — the Verigo-Bohr effect (Verigo 1892, Bohr 1904). The paper is dedicated to a detailed experimental investigation into the influence of blood oxygen saturation on the process of carbon dioxide excretion in the lungs of live animals. The experiments were conducted on large rabbits using an original technique for separate lung respiration via a specially designed double-type tracheobronchial cannula. The author provides a thorough description of the tonometric measurements, the principles of bronchial sealing using a water-filled cuff, and the mercury apparatus utilized for gas sampling.
