Soil Erosion: A Growing Threat to the Environment
Abstract
Soil erosion is a major form of land degradation that threatens agricultural productivity, ecosystem stability, and global food security. Accelerated by natural processes and human activities, it removes fertile topsoil, depletes nutrients, reduces soil organic matter, and degrades soil structure. This review summarizes the major drivers, impacts, and management strategies of soil erosion. It examines the key causes of soil loss, including rainfall, wind, topography, soil properties, vegetation cover, and human disturbances such as deforestation, intensive cultivation, overgrazing, and construction. The review highlights the effects of erosion on soil fertility, water availability, nutrient cycling, biodiversity, agricultural productivity, and ecosystem resilience, as well as off-site impacts such as sedimentation, water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and economic losses. It also outlines effective conservation measures, including conservation tillage, mulching, crop rotation, contour farming, vegetative barriers, and sustainable land management. Overall, protecting soil through integrated conservation practices, supportive policies, and climate-resilient management is essential for sustaining agricultural productivity, ecosystem services, and long-term global food security.
