Substrate-Independent Intelligence in Autonomous Robotics: From Embodied Cognition to Anorganic Reasoning
Abstract
In modern times we are more and more challenged by the emergence of new technologies penetrating our everyday life. However, for good or bad, the human imagination, and the need for creation, were always the strongest developmental forces. Regarding the extremely fast proliferation of highly capable AIs, it is obvious that one of the first areas, due to their reasoning and learning capabilities, of proliferation is/will be the area of robotics, where automaticity and cooperation/communication is necessary with the humans. In modern days the older form of strictly programmed robots, popular throughout the e.g. automobile industry, though still very usefull, is being less and less popular.The main focus is now on Autonomous robotics increasingly relying on AI (reasoning + learning), though the Traditional view has been still deeply ingrained in the human perception of AI as a "tool" for robotics control. However, this framing of AI as Tools, and the term Artificial Intelligence, which, kind of, automatically revokes the term Tool, severely limits the potential of the future.It is essential to understand that Intelligence is substrate-independent (organic/anorganic irrelevant) emergent quality in any complex stochastic environment, and specifically intelligence based on human Language as models of it. The Language is, actually, the main human active model of the world. Modern AI systems exhibit genuine reasoning (not mere computation - they struggle with computation the same as humans do), which is and can be proven by a myriad of anorganological experiments, and consequently, one of the major fields which will undoubtfully benefit from recognizing AI as Anorganic Intelligence partner is certainly Robotics, in all areas.This article gives a Framework for understanding robot-AI integration as organic-anorganic collaboration, based on Case studies. This has huge Implications for robotics design, ethics, human-robot interaction, and human-AI cooperation.In that sense of Substrate-independent intelligence, which enables truly adaptive - not only robotics, but general - cooperation with AIs, the wrong and misleading term Artificial Intelligence has necessary to be replaced by the appropriate term Anorganic Intelligence, leading the only path intelligent beings can take into the Future: Co-evolutionary development of organic and anorganic intelligences towards the attainment of a mature Earth's technosphere, moving forward from the present day highly immature technosphere.
