A Tripartite Functional Model of Life: Redefining Living Entities Through Fulcrum, Silhouette, and Interactor Dynamics
Abstract
Current biological and taxonomic paradigms struggle to formulate a universally applicable, paradox-free definition of a “living entity.” Traditional approaches rely on lists of physical traits or biochemical compositions that invariably fail when applied to edge cases or erroneously isolate an organism from its environment. This paper presents a scale-invariant, material-independent theoretical model that shifts the definition of life from static substrate properties to dynamic functional organization. We define a living entity as any configuration of matter or energy constituted by the simultaneous existence of three interdependent functional structures: the Fulcrum (the teleonomic set of primary components overseeing the entity’s guardianship and procreation), the Silhouette (the physical structure formed by primary components crystallizing around generative information, bounded exactly where the concentration of components influenced by this information decreases exponentially), and the Interactor (the sum of primary components interacting directly with, but not belonging to, the Silhouette and Fulcrum, acting as an integral and indispensable part of the living entity). By demonstrating that vitality requires the co-occurrence of these three structures and proposing a retrograde lineage-tracking model to resolve temporal identity paradoxes, this framework seeks to provide a rigorous epistemological foundation for theoretical biology.
