The effectiveness of clinical guideline on the caregiving performance of mothers with children with cystic fibrosis: A clinical trial study

Abstract

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disorder that causes severe damage to the lungs, digestive system, and other organs of the body. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of clinical guidelines on the caregiving performance of mothers with children with cystic fibrosis. In this clinical trial study, 56 mothers of hospitalized children with cystic fibrosis referred to teaching hospital wards were randomly assigned to two test and control groups using a permutation block design. A demographic information questionnaire and a researcher-made questionnaire to measure mothers’ caregiving performance were used to collect data. The data were analyzed with SPSS 25 software using paired t-test, independent t-test, chi-square, and analysis of covariance. The results using paired t-test and covariance showed that before the intervention, no significant change was observed between the two groups. However, after the intervention, the care performance in the test group was significantly higher than the control group ( P < 0.001). The results of this study showed that implementing clinical guidelines increases the caregiving performance of mothers with children with cystic fibrosis. Therefore, it is suggested that implementing clinical guidelines be used as an effective method to improve the caregiving performance of mothers with children with cystic fibrosis.
