Medical Laboratory Technologists’ Perceptions of Laboratory Information Systems

Abstract

Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) are essential for managing laboratory workflows, yet their effectiveness depends on user acceptance. This study examined Medical Laboratory Technologists’ (MLTs’) perceptions of LIS in Indonesian laboratories. This sequential explanatory mixed-methods study recruited 44 MLTs from modern and conventional laboratories. Quantitative data were collected using a 28-item questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Principal Component Analysis, and Latent Class Analysis. Five informants participated in semi-structured interviews analyzed through thematic analysis. Scale reliability was acceptable (α = 0.759). Most items showed no significant differences between laboratory types. Principal Component Analysis revealed two components explaining 44.6% of variance. MLTs recognized LIS benefits enhanced accuracy, workflow efficiency, accreditation support but identified substantial challenges: system instability, limited connectivity, inadequate IT support, and increased workload. Digital literacy proved more critical than work experience. MLTs perceive LIS as beneficial; however, effectiveness varies based on digital literacy, training quality, organizational readiness, and technical infrastructure. Successful implementation requires strengthened technical support, structured training, and enhanced coordination.
