The Theory of Data: An Introduction — Analytical Meaning, Lawful Transformation, and Governed Results

Abstract

The Theory of Data: An Introduction presents an accessible introduction to the Theory of Data for analysts, data engineers, analytics engineers, semantic-layer developers, and AI engineers. The Theory begins from a distinction that analytical systems often leave implicit: producing values is not the same as establishing what governed analytical object those values represent. It describes analytical data independently of physical storage. A datum is one typed value at one analytical location; a member is one governed realization of a measure at a particular anchor and universe; and a measure is the stable governed family whose laws determine which members share one analytical identity. Version 1.2 incorporates the canonical Version 5.0 distinctions among universe, regime, observation, provenance, and epistemic evidence. Event and spine are universe types governing point existence, while regime governs value generation. It also introduces universe extent, sparse absence and fill rules, regime-sensitive member identity, and the distinction between assignment or protocol regimes and treatment receipt. The paper explains how the Theory distinguishes same-measure member closure, new-measure synthesis, and results that remain provisional; how Manifold records analytical contracts; and how planning, deterministic certification, and physical execution can be separated. It is an introductory companion to The Theory of Data: A Foundational Framework for Governed Analytical Data, Lawful Transformation, and Certification, Version 5.0.
