Shunt-preserving splenectomy in congenital splenic vein agenesis with a giant arch of barkow: case report

Abstract

Splenic vein agenesis is a rare condition. To date, only two cases have been reported. We report the case of a 13-year-old female child who presented with abdominal pain and splenomegaly. Cross-sectional imaging confirmed splenomegaly, with splenic vein agenesis and a collateral vein (Arch of Barkow) traveling across the pelvis. We performed a shunt-preserving splenectomy in this patient. To our knowledge, this is the first case of shunt-preserving splenectomy in a patient with splenic vein agenesis.
