Study on knowledge, attitude, and practice on antibiotic use and resistance in the urban community, Kancheepuram District

Abstract

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global public health concern. Self-medication and the misconception about antibiotics are the major drivers of resistance. The key factors in the use of antibiotics are the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) of the people. Poor knowledge and attitudes favor the emergence of resistant strains. Aims and Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the level of KAP regarding antibiotic use and resistance in an urban community of Kancheepuram and identify the associated sociodemographic factors. Materials and Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 450 participants using an interview schedule consisting of KAP questions on antibiotic use during September–October 2025. The quantitative variables were expressed as mean±standard deviation, and qualitative data were presented as frequency and proportion. Associations were analyzed using Chi-square test, and differences between KAP domains were assessed using Friedman’s test. Results: The mean age of the study participants was 43.6±13.8 years. Majority of the study participants had moderate knowledge (52.9%) and moderate attitude (52.4%) while 61.5% had good practice. Levels of education of study participants had a significant association with their knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding antibiotic use. Conclusion: Overall, the findings of the present study support that irrational use of antibiotics is still very common, although there is moderate awareness on antibiotic resistance. To reduce inappropriate antibiotic use and fight AMR, community-based educational initiatives, legislative control on antibiotic dispensation and pharmacist-led stewardship activities are needed.
