Review finds radiofrequency treatment had similar cancer outcomes to surgery

A systematic review and meta-analysis compared radiofrequency ablation with surgery and other heat-based procedures in 3,612 people with papillary thyroid carcinoma. Compared with surgery, radiofrequency ablation was associated with similar reported disease progression and fewer complications, but the evidence came from a limited number of studies and may not apply to all patients.

New review finds thyroid cancer drugs linked with longer survival in advanced disease

A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials in people with advanced thyroid carcinoma examined tyrosine kinase inhibitors, a group of targeted cancer medicines. Across 13 trials involving 2,671 people, these medicines were associated with longer progression-free survival and overall survival than placebo, although the studies differed considerably in their progression-free survival results. The findings apply to advanced thyroid carcinoma studied in clinical trials, not to all thyroid cancers or all patients.

Review examines when children with thyroid cancer may need radioactive iodine

A narrative review examined the role of radioactive iodine therapy in children and adolescents with differentiated thyroid cancer. It reported that the treatment may be most useful for selected patients at intermediate or high risk, particularly when cancer has spread to the lungs and still absorbs iodine, while routine use in lower-risk children has not shown a survival advantage in the reviewed evidence.
