Shifting fault segments can squeeze coal into bursts underground
A study combining mine monitoring, laboratory tests and computer simulations identifies segmented fault movement and the resulting squeezing of coal as key parts of coalburst formation. It finds that coal under high steady stress can fail when sudden stress is added, while reflected stress waves can damage mine roadways.
