Review reports fewer deep infections with topical antibiotic powder after fracture surgery

A systematic review of five randomized trials involving 1,373 people examined topical vancomycin powder used during surgery for limb fractures. The review reported fewer fracture-related or deep surgical-site infections with the powder than with control care, particularly infections caused by gram-positive bacteria. The authors emphasized that the available trials were small and not consistently high quality.

Review examines long-term quality of life after fracture-related infection

This systematic review examined human studies of long-term quality of life and depressive symptoms after fracture-related infection, a serious infection involving a broken bone. Across 15 studies, physical quality-of-life scores appeared lower than United States population norms, while evidence about mental quality of life and depressive symptoms was less consistent. The researchers said differences among studies and generally limited study quality prevent definitive conclusions.
