A systematic review and meta-analysis examined 18 randomized controlled trials involving adults with type 2 diabetes. Compared with intensified insulin strategies, injectable incretin-based regimens were associated with slightly greater HbA1c reductions, less hypoglycemia, and lower body weight, while gastrointestinal side effects were more frequent.
This review examined human clinical evidence about GLP-1 receptor agonists and neovascular age-related macular degeneration, sometimes called wet age-related macular degeneration, in people with type 2 diabetes. The reviewed studies had conflicting results: one reported higher risk, another lower risk, and two large comparisons found no significant increase. The evidence is observational and does not show that these medicines cause or prevent the eye condition.
In this prospective observational study of 136 adults with type 2 diabetes in Spanish primary care, researchers used 14 days of blinded continuous glucose monitoring while participants were using insulin glargine 100 U/mL. Low blood sugar was detected in some participants, especially at night, while high blood sugar was also common; the study shows patterns and associations rather than treatment effects.
A study in mice and human cells finds that ER stress linked to unfolded proteins can trigger beta cell death through a pathway involving JNK and p53. Inhibiting JNK in living animals, and inhibiting both JNK and p53 in human cells, improved beta cell survival.
