Between Life and Possibility: Existential Anxiety and the Search for Meaning in Matt Haig's The Midnight Library
Abstract
This research paper examines The Midnight Library through an existentialist framework, with particular attention to existentialism, possibility, freedom and choice, loneliness, regret, and the search for meaning. The paper argues that Haig transforms the supernatural concept of the Midnight Library into a philosophical thought experiment through which the protagonist is bound to examine the assumptions underlying her despair. By experiencing multiple possible lives, Nora discovers that there is no predetermined or universally perfect existence waiting to be found. Rather, meaning emerges through the ways individuals respond to uncertainty, exercise freedom, accept responsibility, cultivate relationships, and engage with the possibilities available to them. The novel explores the complex relationship between freedom, regret, responsibility, and the desire to discover a meaningful life.
