A smart agriculture-oriented cross-attention multiscale CNN for sugarcane disease diagnosis

Abstract

Sugarcane leaf diseases can adversely affect crop health and yield, making timely disease identification important for smart agriculture. Manual inspection of leaf diseases is time-consuming and requires expert knowledge, particularly when large cultivation areas need to be monitored. To tackle this problem, this study proposes a Cross-Attention Multiscale Parallel Convolutional Neural Network for automatic classification of sugarcane leaf diseases. This framework comprises a Parallel Feature Extraction Stem, cross-attention mechanism, Dense Connection Blocks, and Inception Blocks to learn disease features at various spatial scales. The PFES extracts fine and broad disease patterns using parallel convolutional branches, while the cross-attention mechanism refines the extracted features by emphasizing disease-related information. The DCB supports feature propagation and reuse, and the IB further captures multi-scale feature representations. The proposed model was tested on two benchmark datasets of leaf diseases for sugarcane plants. The proposed framework obtained an accuracy (98.79%), precision (98.31%), recall (97.81%), specificity (98.60%), and F1-Score (98.05%). For assessing the classification accuracy and consistency of the framework, the comparative study, ablation studies, and five-fold cross-validation are carried out. The results show that CA-MPCNN provides accurate sugarcane leaf disease classification and can support automated disease diagnosis in smart agriculture applications.
