Empirical Alignment of Epic Cognition Theory: A Systematic Review of 2026Q2 Independent Studies

Open access0 citations

Abstract

Epic Cognition Theory (ECT) proposes that consciousness, particularly in its dream and symbolic forms, functions as an active evolutionary “design engine”: a Continuous Symbolic Simulation through which organisms construct their reality, rehearse adaptive solutions, and, through epigenetic and genetic encoding, carry successful designs into their biological architecture. This bulletin examines how closely independent empirical studies published in 2026 and identified during the second-quarter review cycle (2026Q2) align with ECT’s claims and with the physical framework of its companion DDIC spacetime model. It introduces no new data. Thirty primary empirical studies met the inclusion criteria. They span seven domains: dream and sleep research, neuroscience and neurophysiology, epigenetics and chromatin regulation, psychiatric genetics and neurodevelopment, comparative and evolutionary biology, quantum biology and biophotonics, and cosmology. Each study was analyzed in a standard format. The alignment of its findings with specific ECT claims was rated on a four-level scale that measures compatibility rather than uniqueness. Findings in tension with ECT were not scored; they were discussed separately, and testable predictions were proposed for each. Of the 30 studies, 27 were classified as Very Strong Direct and 3 as Strong Direct, yielding a Global Alignment Score of 0.980. The strongest convergences concern: · the dream as a continuous simulation that extends into wakefulness; · the role of REM sleep in reducing the emotional charge of experience, shown both by disrupting and by enhancing REM processing; · a two-stage developmental model of schizophrenia risk, with prenatal and adolescent windows; · evolutionary innovation through the regulatory deployment of existing genetic material; · the lineage-specific filtering of stress responses; spin-dependent quantum processes in living tissue. Two of these findings confirm predictions that ECT had stated in specific form before the studies appeared. The analyses also identified tensions that refine the theory. Among them: the link between DDIC and biological tissue is analogical rather than mechanistic; tonic and phasic REM appear to serve distinct functions; and active creation and receptive engagement with art may differ in effect. None of the reviewed studies was designed to test ECT, and the alignments are interpretive mappings, not experimental confirmations. The bulletin’s purpose is to make ECT’s claims and their empirical correspondences explicit and to propose the experiments that could falsify them.
