Decoherence Truncation in Quantum Interference: A Binary Locking Model vs. Exponential Decay in Fullerene Experiments
Abstract
Abstract Conventional decoherence theory predicts that the visibility of quantum interference decays exponentially as the interaction with an environmental probe increases. In this brief report, we propose an alternative phenomenological model based on a "binary locking" mechanism, where the transition from a quantum superposition to a definite state is a topological event rather than a continuous process. We compare the standard exponential decay model with our linear locking model, V=1−αPV=1−αP, against the experimental data from laser-grating interference of C60 and C70 fullerenes (arXiv:0902.0234). While both models fit the low-power regime, the exponential model fails to explain the sharp truncation (abrupt drop to zero) of interference visibility observed in C70 at high probe powers (around 16-17 W). The Pure Locking Inference (PLI) binary locking model naturally predicts this critical truncation, providing a novel perspective on the quantum-to-classical transition.
