Fabrication of armored superhydrophobic aluminum surface by combining chemical deposition and laser etching

Open access0 citations

Abstract

Superhydrophobic surfaces have considerable potential for applications in self-cleaning, anti-icing, and corrosion protection. However, their practical performance is often limited by mechanical damage to the micro/nano structures on surface, which can lead to degradation or loss of superhydrophobicity. To address this limitation, an armored superhydrophobic aluminum surface was fabricated by combining chemical deposition with laser etching. This armored superhydrophobic surface exhibited strong liquid repellency and self-cleaning performance. Sandpaper abrasion tests demonstrated that the armored structures effectively protected the underlying micro/nano structures and maintained the superhydrophobic state after mechanical abrasion. Electrochemical tests showed that this superhydrophobic surface exhibited enhanced corrosion resistance compared with original aluminum. In addition, outdoor exposure tests demonstrated the environmental stability of this superhydrophobic surface under natural conditions. Freezing experiments further revealed a longer freezing delay time compared with original aluminum. This work enhances the durability of superhydrophobic aluminum surfaces and provides a basis for their further development toward practical applications.
