Beyond Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) Distributed Ledgers: A Formal Critique of Decentralization Fallback, Zero-Cost State Bloat, and Total-Order Latency in IOTA/Hedera vs. Deterministic Proof of Truth (PoT) and Real-Time Optimization (RTO P2.0)
Abstract
Following the formal proof of structural scalability limits and off-by-one "Fencepost Bugs" (植木算バグ) in linear 1D Proof-of-Work (PoW) and Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchains (Monographs #196 and #197), proponents of alternative distributed ledger technologies frequently posit that replacing a single linear chain with a mesh-like Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG)—exemplified by IOTA (Tangle) and Hedera Hashgraph—resolves throughput and environmental energy bottlenecks. This monograph permanently notarizes and mathematically formalizes the author's three-part primary manuscript, "Q&A Script for Converging Discourse onto the Technical Superiority and Necessity of Proof of Truth (PoT) and Real-Time Optimization (RTO) Architectures" (Sheets ①–③). We prove that DAG architectures fail across three insurmountable mathematical and physical walls: (1) The Hollowing-Out of Decentralization (Self-Contradiction): because local random-walk tip selection on a partial-order graph G = (V, E) cannot autonomously resolve conflicting branches or establish a canonical total order under asynchronous network delays, DAGs are forced to rely on centralized Coordinators or permissioned Governing Councils, erasing any advantage over classical distributed databases; (2) The Zero-Cost Trap and State Bloat: eliminating physical PoW energy costs removes the thermodynamic barrier against Sybil spam and "parasite chain" injection (C_attack -> 0 => lambda_spam -> infinity), causing super-linear graph traversal overhead and rapid node storage exhaustion (State Bloat); and (3) Physical Propagation Latency and the Total-Order Wall: even when vertices are appended in parallel, preventing double-spending and achieving finality requires global graph convergence bounded by the relativistic speed of light in fiber (c_fiber = c / n_ref) and FLP/Byzantine agreement rounds. We conclude that DAGs are merely a topological "engineering patch" that alters data shape without guaranteeing state validity, whereas pre-execution logical locking via Proof of Truth (PoT) over the 64-bit Goldilocks prime field (F_p, p = 2^64 - 2^32 + 1) and Real-Time Optimization (RTO P2.0) satisfies institutional fiduciary duties. License & Integrity Covenant: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) with Strict No-Learn Covenant (NLL-v1.0-2026).
