Correlation of Proprioception with Functional and Patient-Reported Measures in Knee Osteoarthritis: An Observational Study Protocol

0 citations

Abstract

Introduction Proprioceptive deficits alter neuromuscular control, potentially worsening disability in knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Impaired proprioception can impact motor performance, especially goal-directed movements. The present study aims to examine the correlation between proprioception, task-oriented performance, and self-reported measures in KOA.Methods This cross-sectional observational study will recruit 112 individuals aged 40–60 years with bilateral KOA (grade ≤ II). Proprioception will be assessed using the Sensamove device. Performance-based physical function will be evaluated with five functional tests. Self-reported knee function will be evaluated with the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS). Data will be analyzed after normality testing, with a significance level of p < 0.05.Results The study anticipates identifying significant correlations between proprioceptive accuracy, performance-based functional limitations, and KOOS subscale scores. Poor proprioception is expected to be associated with reduced physical performance and lower self-reported knee health.Discussion Study protocol findings will enhance understanding of sensorimotor deficits in KOA and will guide future clinical assessments and rehabilitation strategies that incorporate proprioceptive and sensorimotor training to improve functional outcomes and quality of life.
