Perception and Creativity Symbiosis:The Evolution of Architectural Representation from Hand-Drawing to VR
Abstract
This study investigates the evolution of perception in architectural drawing, tracing the shift from hand-drawn sketches to computer-assisted techniques and immersive virtual reality. Through a comprehensive theoretical review and comparative analysis, it explores how these tools reshape spatial representation and enhance creative expression, with a particular focus on the pedagogical implications for drawing instruction in universities. The research explores the evolution of our understanding of perceptual processes over time, focusing on descriptive geometry's role in conceptualizing and communicating complex spatial forms. Findings point to a balanced synergy, advocating a hybrid approach that integrates the intuitive creativity of hand-drawn sketches with the technical precision of digital tools. Informed by classroom experiences, this proposed methodology empowers architectural students to navigate technological advancements while preserving the cognitive engagement and artistic intuition essential to drawing. The study contributes significantly to spatial design knowledge, providing actionable insights for architects, educators, and researchers on nurturing creativity through integrated representational practices that bridge historical techniques with contemporary technologies in the teaching/learning environment
