Mining in Tasmania – a personal account

Abstract
Carol Bacon was the first female to be awarded a scholarship by the Tasmanian Department of Mines. She spent 38 years with the Department, during which she became the first female State Chief Geologist of Tasmania and the first female to act in the position of Director of Mines. When she started work, women did not work in mines in Tasmania and few women worked in the mining industry in general, a situation that had changed markedly by the time she retired in 2013.
