Mapping intelligent manufacturing implementation barriers to industry 5.0 pillars: Evidence from the electronics industry
Abstract
Subject to global economic headwinds, electronics manufacturing is at the cusp of a transition. Several factors, ranging from geopolitics to technological innovation, have challenged manufacturing at a global scale in the form of uncertainties and disruptions. The emergence of digitally empowered, resilient and sustainable manufacturing has led to the development of Intelligent Manufacturing (IM). The purpose of the study is to identify the barriers of IM systems in electronics manufacturing. In this research, critical barriers that hinder the implementation of IM have been identified and analyzed. using fuzzy logic and DEMATEL analysis. The identified barriers have also been classified as institutional, organizational and technological barriers. Sensitivity analysis using Monte Carlo simulation is performed to test the relevance of the results presented in the study. The identified barriers are also mapped to Industry 5.0 pillars (human-centricity, sustainability and resilience) to understand their relevance in the emerging industrial paradigm. While many studies discuss newer paradigms in manufacturing, this study details the most critical barriers for IM implementation in the electronics industry. The results and insights derived from the study would benefit researchers and managers in prioritizing strategies to effectively intervene during decision making.
