The codification of labour law in Greece
Abstract
The main goal of labour law is to provide adequate protection for employees without hindering economic growth. Labour law provisions are often criticized for being complex, inconsistent, and ineffective. Codification is accordingly presented as the process of consolidating fragmented legislation into a single, coherent code in order to improve its effectiveness. First, we examine the history of codification in Greece, given that many other attempts preceded the last comprehensive effort of 2025. We then address the general parameters of codification, and examine how they were implemented in the Greek codification and resulted in the Greek Labour Code. Finally, we consider the amendment of the provisions of the Code.
