Decoding the Ventral Metencephalon: A Neurosymbolic Analysis of Dhumavati Iconography
Abstract
This paper decodes the brainstem neuroanatomy encoded within Mahavidya Dhumavati. Her iconography-including the aged widow, driverless chariot, winnowing basket, and retinue- is presented as a neurosymbolic map of the ventral Metencephalon, specifically detailing the pontine reticular formation, parabrachial nucleus, and autonomic pathways. The study demonstrates how Sakta symbolism systematically preserves ancient knowledge of survival architecture, metabolic sensing, and sensory gating mechanisms. Furthermore, her Beejmantra- ‘Dhum’ is analyzed as a neuro-acoustic tool that actively engages trigeminal, vagal, and pontine circuits to induce parasympathetic dominance (pratyahara). This framework provides a practical tool for STEM education, using cross-cultural semiotics to help students grasp complex brainstem anatomy and autonomic regulation through intuitive cognitive models.
