Abstract
Wang, Lawrence K. 王抗曝 (2026), "Research on Sun Yat sen Portrait Circulation Coins and Commemorative Coins — In Memory of My Elder Brother, Justin Ching Lin Wang"《孫中山像流通幣與紀念幣研究:紀念兄長王清臨》, Global Humanities and Liberal Arts, Lenox Institute Press, MA, USA. 2026(10D); 86 pages. ABSTRACT: Drawing on coin images and family recollections provided by the author, together with central bank records, museum collections, numismatic research, and issuance announcements, this article examines the continuity and changes in Sun Yat-sen's portrait on circulation coins, patterns and trial strikes, and commemorative coins. Against the background of designs commemorating the founding of the Republic in its early years, the study focuses on comparisons between the standard Year 21 three-birds-and-junk one-dollar coin and the gold-standard pattern; the junk designs of Years 22 through 24; and Taiwan's 1949 silver five-jiao coin, 1950 aluminum two-jiao coin, 1954 copper–aluminum alloy five-jiao coin, 1965 birth-centenary commemorative coins, and 2011 coins commemorating the Republic's centenary. Documentary sources also supplement the discussion with Sun Yat-sen commemorative issues from Taiwan in 2015 and mainland China in 2016. The article distinguishes the date inscribed on a coin from its actual minting date and the event being commemorated, as well as legal face value from metal value and collecting significance. It does not treat photographs as substitutes for physical authentication. The study shows that an identical portrait does not imply an identical monetary system, and that a coin with commemorative significance may also serve as circulating currency. Through this research, the author recalls the family collecting tradition begun by his mother, Zhu Xiuyu, its transmission through his two elder brothers, and his childhood exchanges of coins and stamps after the family moved to Taiwan in 1949. In particular, the article commemorates his third elder brother, Justin Ching-Lin Wang (Wang Ching-Lin, 1933–2026), using the Year 22 junk dollar—whose date corresponds to his brother's birth year—to connect public history with the affection between siblings.
