Open access0 citations

Abstract

The present study refers to the case of a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) educational program that was implemented with individuals with disabilities in a thematic technological museum in Greece. The educational program entitled From the Olive Press to the Art Gallery took place on the occasion of the “Green Cultural Routes,” a national cultural campaign of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture that aims, among others, to promote sustainable development through activities related to culture and natural environment and enhance participation of varied social groups. The study discusses issues of inclusion and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the interconnection of STEAM core elements and its potential for all, including persons with disabilities, within museums. It presents the methodology, the collaboration framework, the content, the structure, and the implementation of the educational program with a group of individuals with disabilities from a local Center for Creative Employment of Children and Individuals with Disabilities (KDAP-AmeA). Evaluation data were gathered via (1) questionnaires completed by the educators who accompanied the group and by museum staff who attended the program and (2) field notes by the authors and instructors. The discussion presents ways in which museums promote inclusion, SDGs, and meaningful experiences for persons with disabilities and the significance of partnerships for the development of innovative inclusive practices within museums.
