The physician role in increasing patients adherence to the hypertension therapy: psychological and communicative aspects

0 citations

Abstract

The attending physician is a key factor in improving patient adherence to hypertension therapy, the extent to which a patient follows medical recommendations consciously and consistently depends largely on the clinician. Objective. To analyze studies and theoretical approaches regarding the role of the physician in fostering treatment adherence among patients with hypertension. Materials and methods. An analysis of studies published between 2021 and June 2024 in the PubMed and eLIBRARY.RU electronic citation databases was carried out. In addition, official statistical data from the World Health Organization were used. Relevant materials were identified using the following keywords: compliance, treatment adherence, patient education programs, role of the clinician, cardiovascular diseases, and hypertension. Inclusion criteria for scientific papers: original studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses published between 2021 and 2024. Exclusion criteria: articles for which only abstracts are available. Results. The psychological determinants of adherence encompass the relationship of self-regulation, locus of control, motivation, and disease perception. This combination directly influences the patient's compliance with treatment recommendations and the quality of hypertension control. The clinician's personality is a key factor in improving patient compliance. Conclusion. The study demonstrated that treatment adherence is multifactorial; a central role of the physician's personality and the need for a systemic assessment of barriers to treatment were identified.
