Open access0 citations
Abstract
This paper examines the role of speech act instruction in developing pragmatic competence among EFL learners. It focuses on common speech acts, including requests, apologies, refusals, and disagreements, and explores the challenges learners face in using language appropriately. The paper discusses explicit instruction and practical classroom activities, such as role-plays and contextualised dialogues. It concludes that integrating speech act instruction into EFL teaching can help learners communicate more appropriately and effectively in different social contexts.
