Women-Empowered Home-Based Agri-Processing: A Sustainable Approach for Rural Economic Development in Afghanistan

Open access0 citations

Abstract

Conflict and turmoil over the last 50 years have impaired Afghanistan’s agricultural and water infrastructure and threatened rural livelihoods and economic stability. This study assesses value-added, home-based, women-empowered agri-processing in Afghanistan as a sustainable strategy to promote rural economic development, empower women, and enhance food security. By analyzing existing literature, global reports, and regional case studies, this paper highlights the roles of adaptable technologies, microcredit mechanisms, and market linkages in building resilient rural economies and overcoming limitations such as land fragmentation, low technology inputs, and poor agri-infrastructure. The main growth drivers would be harnessing adaptable technology, building rural infrastructure, adopting efficient agricultural practices, and connecting to skilled education. The findings underscore the significance of supportive policies and investments in home-based value-added agri-processing to foster sustainable growth, poverty reduction, and economic inclusivity in Afghanistan.
