Parallax · Twin Tales No. 8 — The Last Pupil · The Summit
Abstract
A pair of short stories from Parallax · Twin Tales, which stage one real dilemma twice: Here, in the world as it is, with invented people in real rooms; There, in the world of Vision Come True, a future that split from ours in 2024 and never emerged. Here, in Geneva, a fact-checker finds that her newspaper's most trusted reporter is right about almost everything, and that the newsroom's AI checker confirmed him by counting copies of his own story; she prints what could not be established. There, in Rhône's Elbow in 2035, two communes ask an intelligence to certify or to cast doubt on a grazing right of 1593; she sends a swarm of scouts, finds the one line the record is silent about, and tells both sides how far they may disagree. Written in part with Claude (Anthropic), an AI model. The ideas, editorial decisions and responsibility for the content are the author's.
