When recovery becomes the new normal: Strategic reversibility for organizational robustness

Open access0 citations

Abstract

Executive summary Organizations navigating permacrisis are not failing to recover: they are recovering into the next crisis. Existing frameworks were designed to restore a stable baseline that no longer exists: each crisis resolution reconfigures the conditions under which the next disruption arrives. This paper introduces strategic reversibility as a structural organizational capability for environments of crisis recurrence: the deliberate design of strategy as a maintained portfolio of viable trajectories, connected by pre-identified thresholds that govern transitions between trajectories. Three interconnected arguments are developed: (1) the recurrence trap, by which rational crisis responses compound organizational lock-in; (2) the externalization problem, whereby firms build their own reversibility at the cost of locking in supply chain partners; and (3) a four-stage implementation framework with five direct recommendations for senior leadership teams.
