Biological Characteristics and Research Progress of the Rice Leaf Beetle Oulema oryzae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Criocerinae)

Open access0 citations

Abstract

The rice leaf beetle, Oulema oryzae, is a pest across eastern Asia and eastern Russia; both its larval and adult stages cause considerable yield losses through foliar consumption. Its obligate diapause ensures population persistence through adverse seasons, but this strategy also hampers outbreak predictability and compromises timely interventions. This paper combines a narrative review with original observations. We first presented original observations on the developmental biology of O. oryzae. The morphological traits of all developmental instars, instar-specific diagnostic features, molting behaviors, and the complete prepupal-to-pupal transition, were described. These observations provide key criteria for accurate field identification and optimal timing of control measures. We then synthesized current knowledge on the biotic and abiotic drivers that shape population dynamics and phenology, as well as evolving integrated pest management (IPM) protocols integrating chemical, biological, and cultural tactics. Finally, we identified critical research frontiers, including the molecular regulation of diapause and development, genomic responses to climate change and cropping intensification, and multitrophic interactions with natural enemies and host plants. By integrating original observations with a broader synthetic review, this paper provides a conceptual foundation for sustainable management and actionable insights for refining IPM strategies against this economically damaging rice pest.
