Artificial Intelligence for Scientific Work: Ethics, Responsibility, and Practical Applications

Open access0 citations

Abstract

Workshop held at the Leipzig University Library (more info here). Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming scientific research, but how can we use these technologies responsibly? This workshop goes beyond simply presenting AI tools and instead focuses on the ethical, legal, and sustainable aspects of their application. We critically discuss how AI systems can influence scientific integrity, from data quality to potential biases in research results. Central to this are good scientific practice, data protection, copyright, and sustainability: How can researchers trustfully integrate AI tools without compromising reproducibility or ethical standards? We also explore ethical challenges such as transparency, fairness, and the long-term consequences of AI usage. Only after clarifying these core questions we address practical use: Which AI tools are suitable for which research goals? The workshop provides an insight into the opportunities and risks of AI in science, with the goal of equipping participants with a clear understanding of essential safeguards and best practices, as well as a practical, secure workflow to confidently integrate AI tools into their research without compromising scientific integrity, reproducibility, or compliance.
