From Einstein's God to an Artificial Conscience
Abstract
Embodied artificial intelligence will act within a world it only partly understands. This paper develops the proposal in Explaining the Conscience of the System: character development, continuing assessment, and separate enforceable governance could together support a functional conscience. Einstein and Spinoza orient the discussion toward intelligibility and humility; Aristotle illuminates character formation; Hume challenges the relationship between reasoning and concern; and Kant emphasizes principled respect for persons. The Digital Character Development Corpus (DCDC) supplies proposed developmental material, while protected reflection, potentially including the Dream Coprocessor, examines cases and experience. The Four Boundary Architecture (4Gate) separately governs admission, protected internal change, communication, and external effectuation. This is a philosophical and engineering research proposal. It reports no new experiments and does not establish subjective moral awareness or deployment readiness. This working paper has not been peer reviewed. Prepared with assistance from OpenAI ChatGPT/Codex in drafting and synthesis.
