ANALYSIS OF THE MAJOR THEMES OF TEDDY AFRO'S LYRIC "ETHIOPIA"

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this study was to make a thematic analysis of the theme of 'Ethiopia'. The Lyric of a selected song of prominent artist Tewodros Kassahun was used as an oeuvre for the study. The main objective of this study is to analyze the major themes of the song lyric ‘Ethiopia’ and literary meanings. The specific objectives are to identify the major themes raised and to examine how the functions of social institutions are addressed through this song lyrics.This study is collected from two sources: audiocassettes and print documents. Thematic and contextual employed a theoretical framework for analysis. The results of the study revealed that the artist has a music philosophy. He firmly voiced 'Ethiopia' as 'motherland' for its people. He tried to allusion the historical and natural heritage of the country as well as the patriotism sacrificed to preserve their heritage. Finally, the study also disclosed that the singer advocates for unity and love of 'motherland' to assure its sovereignty.
