Morphological analysis of Traditional Odunpazarı houses: A study on periods
Abstract
Traditional Turkish House, studied by numerous researchers throughout history, constitutes a significant component of cultural heritage with its architectural, social, and spatial characteristics. This study examines the morphological and spatial changes occurring in the floor plans of Traditional Turkish Houses in Odunpazarı, Eskişehir. Aiming to address the lack of comprehensive and comparative research in the literature, the study selected a total of 30 houses, 15 from each of two distinct construction periods. The selected structures were documented using LIDAR-SLAM technology, and the data obtained were numerically interpreted using spatial syntax methods, analyzing connections, visual integration, and the number of doors. The analysis results show that the garden areas, which have a fundamental socio-spatial function, and the central sofa (living/accommodation room) layout have narrowed over time. The findings reveal that the houses in Odunpazarı have evolved from a socially oriented and holistic housing arrangement to a more compact, inward-facing, and fragmented spatial organization.
