Developing innovative models to improve ease of access and outcomes of rehabilitation services in rural communities: An integrative narrative review
Abstract
Background Rehabilitation services in rural areas face persistent barriers such as geographic isolation, limited infrastructure, and resource constraints, which significantly impact patient access and outcomes. Objective This study investigates innovative models designed to improve rehabilitation access and enhance patient outcomes in these underserved communities. Methods A purposeful sampling strategy was applied, targeting peer-reviewed articles, case studies, and government health reports published between 2008 and 2024 that evaluated rehabilitation models implemented in rural or underserved regions. Results Tele-rehabilitation demonstrated moderate-to-high effectiveness in rural settings with adequate digital infrastructure, while its impact was limited in regions with poor connectivity and low digital literacy. Mobile clinics and community-based rehabilitation improved physical access and service reach in geographically isolated areas but faced challenges related to sustainability and workforce capacity. Hybrid rehabilitation models integrating digital, mobile, and community-based approaches showed greater adaptability across diverse rural contexts, addressing structural, geographic, and workforce-related barriers. Conclusions The study analyzes how human, technological, and infrastructural resources are allocated across different models, providing insights for policymakers on creating scalable, sustainable, and contextually appropriate rehabilitation services tailored to rural healthcare needs. These findings also lay the groundwork for future adaptations and implementations aimed at reducing health inequities in rural populations
