Icosahedral Quasicrystals as Golden-Ratio Projections of 6D Lattices via E8 — E8 Intelligence Research

Abstract

FINDING: Icosahedral quasicrystals are projections of 6D hypercubic lattices, with golden-ratio-modulated plane spacings (Fibonacci chains) that connect to the E8 root system. | MATH: The key construction uses a multigrid of 10 plane sets with icosahedral symmetry (icosagrid). Plane spacing follows a Fibonacci chain — the 1D Fibonacci sequence has a limiting ratio of φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.618. The projection from 6D to 3D uses a cut-and-project method where the acceptance window is a 3D icosahedron; the irrational slope is governed by φ. The icosagrid's 10 planes correspond to the 10 3-fold axes of the icosahedron (which has 6 five-fold axes, 10 three-fold axes, 15 two-fold axes). The connection to E8: the icosagrid's vertices, when properly decorated, map to the 240 roots of E8 (which has 8D symmetry, with 2·(1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8) = 240 roots). The golden ratio appears as the ratio of the two incommensurate length scales in the quasicrystal's diffraction pattern. | CONNECTION: Directly ties to Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
