Feminist sport philosophy Greatest of All Time (GOATs)
Abstract
In this introduction, we contextualize the special issue ‘Feminist sport philosophy Greatest of All Time (GOATs)’ within the sport philosophy field. We claim that, while we should celebrate achievements and new opportunities for women in sport, we must also continue to press for further equity in terms of fair pay, freedom from abuse and sexual objectification, and access to funding, space, and media coverage. Feminist approaches to sport philosophy can help advance these efforts for equity. These approaches can also further develop the field of sport philosophy by expanding our understanding of ethics, justice, equity, and embodiment in sport. We then provide a brief overview of each article included in the special issue, highlighting the main arguments and the feminist philosopher’s work referenced. Some of the feminist sport philosophy GOATs, identified by the authors in this issue, include Eleanor Metheny, Iris Marion Young, Jane English, Catherine MacKinnon, Simone de Beauvoir, Gloria Anzaldúa, Betsy Postow and Sandra Bartky.
