Evaluation of Online Voting System Towards Transmission of Secure Election Results
Abstract
This is an undergraduate final-year project report (a B.Sc. thesis) in Cyber Security, submitted to the Department of Cyber Security at Federal University Dutse in October 2025 by Yunus Yahaya. It runs to 38 pages. The report evaluates, designs and builds a secure online voting system for Zaria Local Government Area in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The aim is to address the problems of paper-based voting: slow counting, fraud, disputed results, limited accessibility and high costs. The prototype uses PHP and MySQL, and the author developed it entirely on an Android smartphone. Its main features are three-factor voter authentication (voter card number, National Identification Number and an email one-time password), complete separation of voter identity from ballot choices, role-based admin access by ward, and audit logging. The report documents the system's design, implementation and testing, and concludes that secure online voting is technically feasible for Nigerian local government elections. It also notes that the system is a prototype that hasn't been tested in a real election. The document is formal and academic: a certification page, dedication, acknowledgements, table of contents, abstract, five chapters, and a reference list. It includes tables, an entity relationship diagram, a use case diagram and screenshots of the system's interfaces.
