Abstract
Harper Lee evokes the biblical Promised Land through the hymns “There’s a Land Beyond the River” and “On Jordan’s Stormy Banks.” As Calpurnia’s congregation sings these hymns, readers are invited to interpret the church service in light of the biblical journey from Egypt to the Promised Land.
