MERLIN SCIENCE — E₈ Lattice Projection Generates Icosahedral Quasicrystals via Golden R — E8 Intelligence Research
Abstract
Two hundred forty vectors. Each one squared length two. Coordinates chosen from the plus and minus one set, or the half integer set with even sum. That is the E₈ root system. And when you project those vectors down into three dimensional space, you do not get a jumble. You get the icosahedral quasicrystal. The finding is this: the golden ratio is not an aesthetic flourish in that projection. It is the scaling constant forced by the geometry. Here is the context. Five fold symmetry is forbidden in a periodic crystal. The crystallographic restriction theorem says a rotation of seventy two degrees cannot tile space periodically. Yet in 1982, Shechtman saw it. That earned the Nobel in 2011. The problem has always been explaining where that aperiodic order comes from without hand waving. The answer appears to live in eight dimensions. The mechanism is concrete. Project E₈ onto a three dimensional subspace using the icosagrid, which is ten sets of parallel planes. Those ten sets correspond Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK. Part of the E8 Intelligence Research series. Platform: e8intelligence.com
