Ramanujan's Tau Congruence Mod 691: Linking Modular Forms and Bernoulli Numbers — E8 Intelligence Research

Open access0 citations

Abstract

FINDING: Ramanujan's tau function satisfies τ(n) ≡ σ₁₁(n) mod 691, a congruence rooted in the constant term of the Eisenstein series E₁₂, linking modular forms to Bernoulli numbers and cyclotomic fields. | MATH: τ(n) ≡ σ₁₁(n) (mod 691); E₁₂ = (65520/691)(1 + Σ σ₁₁(n)qⁿ) + cusp form Δ; B₁₂ = −691/2730; 691 is prime, divides numerator of B₁₂; the cusp form Δ = q∏(1−qⁿ)²⁴ has Fourier coefficients τ(n); the space of weight-12 modular forms is 2-dimensional, spanned by E₁₂ and Δ; the constant term of E₁₂ contains 691 in denominator, forcing the congruence. | CONNECTION: 691 is a prime of the form 6k+1 (691 = 6·115+1), and the weight 12 = 2·(6) — the Eisenstein series E₁₂ lives on the modular curve X(1), whose fundamental domain has cusp width 1; the ratio 65520/691 ≈ 94.82, and 65520 = 2⁴·3²·5·7·13 — note 13 = 2·6+1, and 691 = 12·57+7; the congruence mod 691 is a shadow of the fact that the ring of modular forms of level 1 is generated by E₄ and E₆, with E₁₂ = (441E₄³ + 250E₆²)/691 — the de Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
