Abstract

FINDING: Icosahedral quasicrystals emerge from golden-ratio-modulated plane spacings (Fibonacci chains) in a 10-plane-set multigrid, structurally linked to the E8 lattice. MATH: - Golden ratio φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.6180339887; inverse φ⁻¹ = φ−1 ≈ 0.6180339887; φ² = φ+1 ≈ 2.6180339887. - Fibonacci chain: infinite binary sequence with inflation rule L→LS, S→L (or equivalently, substitution matrix [[1,1],[1,0]] with eigenvalues φ and −1/φ). Plane spacings in the icosagrid follow this chain, breaking periodicity while preserving icosahedral symmetry (H₃ Coxeter group, order 120). - Icosagrid: 10 sets of parallel planes, normals aligned with the 10 3-fold axes of the icosahedron (each normal is a vertex direction of the icosahedron; 10 = 5 pairs of opposite vertices). - E8 connection: The 240 roots of E8 project to 3D under the icosahedral H₃ embedding, yielding the icosagrid's 10 plane normals and the quasicrystal's vertex set (as shown in the arXiv paper: the quasicrystal is a golden Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
