Icosahedral Quasicrystals: 6D A5 Root Lattice and Golden Ratio Scaling — E8 Intelligence Research
Abstract
FINDING: Icosahedral quasicrystals exhibit non-crystallographic symmetry (A5 root system) in 3D, with physical properties (non-Fermi liquid, quantum criticality) linked to their 6D lattice parentage. | MATH: Icosahedral point group \(I_h\) (order 120) is non-crystallographic in 3D; its 6D embedding uses the root lattice \(A_5\) (order 720, Weyl group \(S_6\)). The golden ratio \(\tau = (1+\sqrt{5})/2 = 1.618\ldots\) appears as the scaling factor in the 6D→3D projection (cut-and-project scheme). The 6D lattice basis vectors project to 3D as: \(e_i \to (\cos(2\pi i/5), \sin(2\pi i/5), 1/\sqrt{2})\) for \(i=0..4\), plus \(e_5 \to (0,0,\sqrt{5/2})\), yielding icosahedral vertices. The conjugacy classes of \(I_h\): 5 classes (identity, 12×C5, 12×C5², 20×C3, 15×C2) — simplicity of the rotational subgroup \(A_5\) (order 60) is proven via its action on 6 axes (pairs of opposite vertices). | CONNECTION: The golden ratio \(\tau\) and its inverse \(1/\tau = \tau-1 = 0.618\ldots\) are the inflatio Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
